Developing the Building

Square Corner is a fantastic resource and is already used for a Youth Café, coffee mornings, craft groups, festive celebrations, community meetings, displaying information and much more. However, we believe it can be even better!

Square Corner is owned by St Mary’s Church and has been used as a community building for 40 years. It is much loved but is damp, feels rather dated and can be bitterly cold in the winter due to poor heating and insulation!

Although we could just deal with some of the immediate repair issues there is also a real pressure on space and we want to invest in Square Corner to make it a modern, comfortable and welcoming community building that can serve Uffculme and the surrounding villages for the next 40 years!

Over the last 18 months a project team has been looking at how we can make the most of the building

and really bring it up to date. It is a big dream, and will cost around £240,000, but we believe it is possible.

Our ambition is to make Square Corner:

  • A place to meet friends

  • A place to find practical help and support

  • A place to learn a new skill

  • A place to hold a community meeting or group

  • A hub of information

  • A place to raise support for your local project.

  • A welcoming Community Café space

The redevelopment project:

    • Cleaning up the frontage, replacing the shop window and renovating the sash windows.

    • Extending the kitchen.

    • Adding an office and toilet on the first floor.

    • Improving access to the loft room.

    • Installing gas central heating.

    • Improving the energy efficiency of the windows, roof and flat roof.

    • Providing new energy efficient lighting.

    • Providing data networking and audio visual equipment for training.
